How Long Does a Spray Tan Last? A Calgary Spray Tan Artist Explains

Quick Answer: How Long Does a Spray Tan Last?

Most professional spray tans look their best for about 5 to 7 days, with some colour potentially lasting around 7 to 10 days depending on your skin, preparation, lifestyle and aftercare.

A spray tan doesn't simply "wash off." The tanning ingredient DHA reacts with cells at the surface of your skin to create temporary colour. As those surface skin cells naturally shed, your tan gradually fades.

That means two people can receive the same spray tan on the same day and have completely different-looking tans a week later.

The secret to a longer-lasting spray tan isn't necessarily going darker.

It's getting your skin ready before the appointment and treating it nicely afterward.

And yes, I am unfortunately about to tell you that aggressively scrubbing yourself with a towel after every shower is not helping the cause.

Why Does a Spray Tan Fade?

Let's start with what a spray tan actually does.

Most sunless tanning products use an ingredient called DHA (dihydroxyacetone). DHA reacts with amino acids in the outermost layer of your skin, creating the temporary brown colour we recognize as a sunless tan.

Unlike a suntan, this process doesn't require UV exposure.

Because the colour develops within the outermost skin cells, it fades as those cells naturally shed.

That's why a spray tan is temporary.

It also explains why anything that speeds up exfoliation can speed up the fading process.

Long hot showers, swimming, shaving, scrubbing, exfoliating and dry skin can all affect how evenly and how quickly your colour disappears.

How Long Does a Professional Spray Tan Usually Look Good?

For most clients, I tell them to think of their spray tan in stages.

Days 1–2: Freshly Tanned

Your tan has developed, you've completed your first rinse and the final colour is settling in.

This is generally when the tan is at its freshest.

Don't panic if you rinse and initially feel lighter than expected. The cosmetic bronzer you see immediately after your appointment is not your final tan.

Your developed colour is underneath.

Days 3–5: The Sweet Spot

For many people, this is when their spray tan looks really freaking good.

The colour has settled beautifully and still looks even and fresh.

If you're tanning for a wedding, photos, vacation, event or something where you really care about how the colour photographs, this timing matters.

Days 6–7: Gradual Fading

Around this point, you may start noticing some fading.

Areas that experience more friction, washing or movement can fade sooner than others.

Hands and face are often among the first places you'll notice colour disappearing because we wash them more frequently.

Days 7–10: Time to Say Goodbye

Some clients will still have visible colour at this point, particularly if they've taken great care of their skin.

But you're generally moving into the fading stage rather than expecting your tan to look freshly sprayed.

And that's normal.

A good spray tan isn't supposed to cling to you indefinitely like a questionable life decision.

What Makes a Spray Tan Last Longer?

There isn't one magic product.

The longevity of your spray tan is usually the result of several small things working together.

1. Exfoliate Before Your Appointment

One of the best things you can do for your spray tan happens before you ever walk into the studio.

Exfoliation helps remove loose dead skin cells and creates a smoother surface for your tan.

Ideally, do your main exfoliation before the day of your appointment rather than aggressively scrubbing yourself five minutes before leaving the house.

Pay extra attention to areas that tend to be drier or thicker, such as:

  • Knees

  • Elbows

  • Ankles

  • Feet

You want smooth skin.

You do not want angry skin.

More exfoliation isn't automatically better.

2. Arrive With Clean Skin

On the day of your spray tan, arrive with clean, completely dry skin, but try to avoid showering immediately before your appointment.

Ideally, shower, exfoliate and complete any hair removal the day before your spray tan. This gives your skin time to settle and helps create a nice, even canvas for your colour.

Showering too close to your appointment, especially with hot water, can leave your skin warm and damp. Body washes, conditioners, shaving products and moisturizing cleansers can also leave behind residue that may interfere with how evenly your tanning solution develops.

If you do need to shower the day of your appointment, keep it lukewarm, avoid oil-based or heavily moisturizing products, and give your skin plenty of time to cool down and completely dry before you come in.

And arrive product-free whenever possible. That means no body oils, heavy lotions, deodorant or other products that could create a barrier on the skin.

Your skin doesn't need a twelve-step pre-tan skincare routine.

Clean, dry and boring is exactly what we want.

3. Do Hair Removal Before Your Spray Tan

If you're shaving, waxing or sugaring, plan your hair removal before your spray tan.

Hair removal after tanning can also remove surface skin cells and take some of your fresh colour along for the ride.

This is particularly important if you're combining body sugaring and spray tanning.

At Wyld Sol, I offer both, so we can help you figure out the timing rather than playing beauty-service Tetris on your own.

4. Follow Your Exact Rinse Time

At Wyld Sol, I only offer rapid rinse spray tans, which means you don't have to spend eight-plus hours marinating in your tan before you can shower.

Your exact rinse time will depend on your skin, the solution we're using and how deep you want your final colour to develop. I'll give you a specific rinse time before you leave your appointment, and it's important to follow it.

Leaving a rapid tan on longer does not automatically mean a better tan.

Your first rinse removes the cosmetic bronzer, but your actual tan will continue developing afterward. So don't panic if you rinse and feel lighter than you expected. That's completely normal.

And please don't decide that if I told you three hours, six hours must mean twice the tan.

Spray tan math does not work that way.

Follow your rinse time, let the colour continue doing its thing, and you'll see your final tan develop over the hours that follow.

Does a Rapid Spray Tan Last as Long as an Overnight Spray Tan?

It can.

Rapid refers primarily to how quickly you can rinse the cosmetic bronzer off, not necessarily how quickly your finished tan disappears.

With a rapid tan, I'll recommend a rinse time based on the desired depth of colour.

Your colour can continue developing after that initial rinse.

With an overnight solution, you'll typically leave the product on longer before rinsing.

Which option is better depends more on your schedule, skin and desired result than on which one sounds more powerful.

If you absolutely hate sleeping in a spray tan, rapid may be your new favourite invention.

If you don't mind developing overnight, that's also a great option.

How Do You Make a Spray Tan Last Longer?

Once you've rinsed, your job becomes remarkably simple:

Keep your skin hydrated and don't unnecessarily exfoliate your tan away.

Moisturize Regularly

Dry, flaky skin doesn't fade particularly gracefully.

Keeping your skin moisturized can help your tan fade more evenly.

I generally recommend moisturizing regularly after your first rinse with products that are appropriate for spray-tanned skin.

And this is one area where consistency beats panic.

Moisturizing once when your legs suddenly resemble the surface of a croissant isn't quite the same as keeping your skin hydrated throughout the week.

Keep Showers Reasonable

I know.

A long, scorching shower feels wonderful.

Your spray tan has submitted a formal complaint.

Long exposure to hot water can contribute to your tan fading faster, so keep showers reasonable when you're trying to preserve your colour.

Pat, Don't Scrub

After showering, gently pat your skin dry rather than aggressively rubbing yourself down with a towel.

We're trying to preserve the surface of your skin.

Not sand a dining table.

Avoid Exfoliating Until You're Ready to Remove the Tan

Before your appointment, exfoliation is your friend.

Immediately afterward?

Different story.

Skip body scrubs, exfoliating mitts and aggressive exfoliation while you're trying to maintain your colour.

Once the tan has reached the end of its life and you're preparing for your next appointment, that's when we want to properly remove the remaining colour and start fresh.

What Makes a Spray Tan Fade Faster?

If you want your tan to stick around, there are a few things worth knowing.

Your tan may fade faster with:

Swimming: Chlorinated pools and prolonged time in water can shorten the life of your tan.

Hot tubs: Heat, soaking and treated water are not exactly a spray tan's dream vacation.

Long baths: You're soaking the exact layer of skin we're trying to keep evenly coloured.

Frequent shaving: A razor provides some physical exfoliation along with removing hair.

Aggressive towel drying: Friction can contribute to uneven fading.

Body scrubs and exfoliating products: Fantastic when it's time to remove your tan. Less fantastic on day three.

Very dry skin: Dry skin tends to shed less evenly, which can make fading look patchier.

Heavy sweating: Frequent workouts or activities that involve substantial sweating can affect longevity, especially in high-friction areas.

This doesn't mean you need to become a houseplant for seven days.

Live your life.

Just understand that a beach vacation involving daily swimming is going to treat your spray tan differently than a week spent mostly on dry land.

Why Does My Face Fade Faster Than My Body?

This is extremely common.

Think about everything your face encounters compared with your stomach or thighs.

Cleansing.

Skincare.

Makeup removal.

Sweat.

Pillows.

Potential exfoliating ingredients.

And washing your face twice a day.

So if your face fades before the rest of your body, it doesn't necessarily mean anything went wrong with your spray tan.

It may simply be living a much busier life.

Why Do Hands and Feet Fade Differently?

Hands get washed constantly.

Feet deal with shoes, socks, showers and friction.

They're also naturally drier and have thicker skin in certain areas, which can affect how tanning products develop and fade.

This is one reason professional spray tanning involves more than spraying the exact same amount of solution everywhere and hoping for the best.

Application should account for areas such as hands, feet, elbows and knees.

From Whitney's Treatment Room

One of the biggest misconceptions I hear is that the darkest possible spray tan must also be the best or longest-lasting spray tan.

That's not how I approach colour at Wyld Sol.

My goal isn't to make every client as dark as humanly possible.

It's to create a tan that actually makes sense on you.

Your natural skin tone, undertone, how easily you normally tan, the event you're tanning for and the result you want all matter.

Sometimes the most beautiful result is not the darkest option.

It's the colour that has people wondering where you went on vacation.

That's why I customize spray tans instead of treating every body like it belongs to the same paint swatch.

Will Going Darker Make My Spray Tan Last Longer?

Not necessarily.

A deeper colour may remain visually noticeable for longer simply because there's more contrast as it fades, but choosing an unnecessarily dark solution isn't a magic longevity trick.

The right depth should be chosen based on your skin and desired result.

If your main goal is longevity, focus on good preparation and good aftercare, not just going darker.

How Long Before an Event Should I Get My Spray Tan?

For an important event, I generally don't want your spray tan appointment happening as you're putting on your shoes to leave.

Timing gives your colour an opportunity to fully develop and allows you to complete your initial rinse.

For weddings, vacations, graduations, photoshoots and other important events, we'll choose your appointment timing based on your schedule, the type of tan you're receiving and when you need your colour looking its best.

If it's your first-ever spray tan before a major event, booking a trial beforehand can also be a great idea.

You get to see how your skin develops, how deep you like your colour and how your tan fades.

Then there's much less guesswork when the important date arrives.

Does a Spray Tan Protect You From the Sun?

No.

This one is really important.

Looking tan does not mean your skin is protected from UV exposure.

Unless a specific tanning product contains sunscreen and is labelled with an SPF, you should not assume your spray tan provides sun protection.

So if you're getting sprayed before Mexico, Hawaii, a wedding in Palm Springs or three glorious Calgary summer days before it snows again:

You still need sunscreen.

A spray tan gives you colour.

It does not give you permission to fight the sun.

How Often Can You Get a Spray Tan?

Many regular spray-tan clients choose to book around special events, vacations or whenever they want fresh colour.

If you're getting tans regularly, the important part is properly removing the previous tan before applying a fresh one.

We don't want layers of old, uneven tan underneath your new application.

Think clean canvas.

Not spray-tan lasagna.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does a spray tan last?

Most professional spray tans look their best for roughly 5 to 7 days, although some colour may remain for around 7 to 10 days depending on your skin, preparation, lifestyle and aftercare.

How long does a rapid spray tan last?

A properly applied rapid tan can have similar longevity to an overnight tan. "Rapid" refers primarily to the shorter time before your first rinse.

When does a spray tan look its best?

Many clients love their colour most during the first few days after development, often around days two through five.

Can I shower every day with a spray tan?

Yes. You don't have to stop showering to preserve your tan. Keep showers reasonable, avoid unnecessary scrubbing and gently pat your skin dry afterward.

Can I shave after a spray tan?

You can, but shaving may shorten the life of your tan because it also exfoliates some of the skin's surface. If possible, complete hair removal before your appointment.

Can I swim with a spray tan?

Yes, but prolonged swimming, particularly in chlorinated water, can cause your tan to fade faster.

Should I moisturize after a spray tan?

Once you've completed your instructed first rinse, keeping your skin regularly moisturized can help support more even-looking fading.

Can I get body sugaring and a spray tan?

Absolutely. The order and timing matter, though. Hair removal should generally happen before your spray tan so you aren't exfoliating away your fresh colour afterward.

Will a spray tan make me orange?

A professional custom spray tan should be selected with your natural skin tone, undertone and desired result in mind. At Wyld Sol, colour isn't one-size-fits-all. The goal is natural-looking colour that works with your skin.

Looking for a Natural-Looking Spray Tan in Calgary?

If you're searching for a spray tan in Calgary, you don't need to know which solution, depth or development time you need before booking.

That's my job.

At Wyld Sol Body Sugaring & Spray Tanning, custom spray tans are selected around your skin tone, undertone, schedule and the result you're actually looking for.

Want subtle and sun-kissed?

Perfect.

Want noticeably bronzed for vacation?

Also perfect.

Terrified you're going to turn orange?

Come sit by me.

We'll talk about your skin, what you're tanning for and how deep you actually want to go before we choose your colour.

Because the goal isn't to look like you got a spray tan.

The goal is for everyone to wonder where the hell you went for the weekend.
